Basic Light

Light and Form Part 2

Here is the standard form shading on basic shapes. Note the differences between the curved surface lighting and the flat surfaces. Also note how angle of the flat surfaces affects the shading. The box on top of the cylinder has some reflected light on the side. A side needs to at least be 90 degrees of less in order to pick up reflected light from a surface it is sitting on. The pyramids sides are to great. They face away from the surface on which it sits. Knowing such basic lighting effects is important, for making sure your art has the extra subtle details, that will make it can be. Another subtle detail you need to think about is how the shadows get slightly lighter, as they get further from the surface casting the shadow. This is to account for scattered lighting - bouncing back from other surfaces. Note: The lighting in the diagram is not 100% accurate - it is merely set up to show basic concepts correctly.
